ZÜRICH In the recent past a whole range of interesting new projects have been realised in Zürich, with the goal to create a "mixed city" ('Die durchmischte Stadt'). Industrial plots, falling vacant, offered a unique opportunity for new neighbourhoods like Zürich-West or Neu-Oerlikon. Projects such as Puls 5, Sihlcity and the Hürlimann-areal show how living, working, leisure and attracting (or keeping) the creative class can be put into practice.

Especially the 'Genossenschaften', housing corporations in which also the tenants are shareholders, realise innovative living- and housingconcepts. Different projects experimented with a so-called 'lifestyle-approach', which led to interesting architectural results, like for example Patrick Gmür's design of 'JAMES'.

Besides these exceptional areal-developments Swiss architects mainly work inside the existing city structure. Zürich has many 'on the spot'-interventions scattered around the city. The stadion Letzigrund (Bétrix & Consolascio Architekten) shows an ingenious use of steel, while EM2N's houses on the Hegianweg can be seen as a pilot project for timber constructions in the apartment sector. The Freitag Flagshipstore, a tower constructed of sea-containers, has become an almost non-Swiss architectural icon. Apart from the architecture of the object, a lot of attention has been spent on the 'Zürcher' public space, which manifests itself in various city squares and parks.

ArchEX organises architecture guided tours and custom made excursions for groups in Switzerland, Zürich and Graubünden. For more information and a free price offer, please contact us.
