SWITZERLAND has, despite its modest size as a country, the reputation for having a rich architecture practice and an extraordinary high level of execution. Contemporary Swiss architecture, internationally represented by architects like Herzog & De Meuron and Peter Zumthor, can by characterised by the innovation in building techniques and abstract refinements. Apart from applying new building materials also 'proved and tested' materials, like timber, are used, and adapted to contemporary needs and building regulations.

Solitary buildings in the Swiss (city-)landscape are often highly 'monolithic', without detracting from the natural and built environment. On the level of cities the spatial limitations come into play: large-scale urban projects are only rarely found in Switzerland. The cities are considered to be 'built' for the mayor part and the number of vacant plots is very limited. As a result, 'architecture' often takes place on the level of densification, renovation, re-structuring and interiors.

Even though Swiss architecture is commonly known for its ascetic appearance, the last years show an remarkable 'explosion' of the use of colour. Especially the younger generation of Swiss architects, like Gmür Steib, EM2N, Camenzind and several smaller offices, have created numerous examples of this trend.

ArchEX organises architecture guided tours and custom made excursions for groups in Switzerland, Zürich and Graubünden. For more information and a free price offer, please contact us.
