OOSTERDOK Directly
next to Central Station a new, urban, highly dense city quarter has
been realized with public functions, offices and housing.
Sustainability plays an important role. The first buildings to be
accomplished were the new Central Public Library by Jo Coenen (07/
2007) and the Conservatorium (09/ 2008). Until the start of its
refurbishment in July 2008 the former main post office accommodated the
Stedelijk - the Museum of Modern Art.
HET FUNEN On a
former production site between a main railway connection, a 19th
century city structure and a canal 565 houses and 3000m2 office space
have been built (2009). The masterplan of De Architekten Cie reacts
carefully on the adjusting areas protecting from noise and dense
traffic and connecting to the existing city quarter.
PLANTAGE QUARTER Different
projects in and around the historical Plantage district: new buildings,
conversion of old houses, densification and extensions, such as a
canteen building by Steven Holl, the local architecture centre ARCAM,
housing by Claus en Kaan, Erick van Egeraat, Liesbeth van der Pol, VMX,
de Architekten Cie.
SCIENCEPARK In
the east of Amsterdam the faculties of Science of the University of
Amsterdam, different research institutes and aligned firms are settled
in a "Sciencepark". At the entry of the area several housing projects
also for students have been realized. They form a transition to the
neighbouring housing districts. A housing project from HVDN shows
innovative solutions regarding the treatment of noise, the University
College of Mecanoo puts a strong focus on sustainability.
MUSEUMS After long years of
refurbishment,
renovation and extension
diverse museums shine in new splendor : Rijksmuseum (Cruz + Ortiz
2012), Stedelijk Museum (Meyer van Schooten 2012), Scheepvaartmuseum
(Dok architecten 2011).
