INNER CITY, CANALS AND ALSTER LAKE The inner city of Hamburg profits from its unique location on the Alster, Hamburgs' inland water. The Rathausmarkt, the square in front of the city hall, with its consciously designed relation to the Binnenalster and the canals shows strong parallels to the Markus Square in Venice. Whereas around the Binnenalster in the first place upmarket retail with elegant shops is to be found, the Mönckebergstraße connects the main station and the city hall as main shopping street.

The city centre is covered with a network of shopping malls which has become a typical feature of Hamburg. Also with less good weather they guarantee shopping pleasure. The typologies vary from small covered retail streets to the multilevel " Europapassage". Partly initiated by local shop owners the public space has been newly designed and furnished.

The favoured inner city locations are constantly densified and renewed. The solutions range from sofisticated infills and outstanding single projects to small district developments such as the Brahmsquartier at the edge of the inner city in direct proximity to one of the last "Gängeviertel" (mews district) of Hamburg.
